Montenegro
Montenegro

The up-and-coming destination, Montenegro will soon have more yacht slips than St. Tropez, thanks to Jean-Francois Pinault (aka Salma Hayek’s husband and Linda Evangelista’s baby daddy).  While most heard of Montenegro from the James Bond movie Casino Royale, Montenegro is much more.  Rugged and naturally beautiful, its name, Montenegro, translates into “Black Mountains” which is none the more stunning than at a purple and pink hued sunset.  For now, it’s fairly undiscovered but with just enough glamour like the beach club Lido for poolside eye candy, high-end shops in Porto Montenegro and the Aman Resorts Villa Milocer and Sveti Stefan.

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka

A completely unspoiled and undiscovered area of the world, Sri Lanka is where you will find your own inner peace.  There is limited infrastructure in the country of lush countryside and Buddhist temples, and the people could not be more welcoming and warm.  You will find yourself embracing the locals, culture and natural beauty of the region.  A visit to Sri Lanka will give you an appreciation of the goodness and spirit of human kind.  For accommodations, you can go hardcore basic with the rugged adventurers, where a steam room means laying in wicker basket with boiling water beneath you.  Or our preference is to check into the Aman Resort outposts, appropriately meaning Peace, to experience Sri Lanka in simple luxury.

Puglia, Italy
Puglia, Italy

With 1000-year old olive trees, rolling hills and vineyards in the countryside and Trulli homes which will remind you of a real-life Smurf village, Puglia is the undiscovered Italy.  A visit to Puglia now is to experience the authenticity of Italian village life and some of the best food in the country.  In Puglia, you’re among the chic Italian travelers, so come before the word gets out and the tour buses roll in.  Even Romans are known to make the 5 hour drive just to eat in the seafood restaurants and stay at the Borgo Egnazia.  In a country where they pride themselves in cuisine, this speaks volumes.

Castiglion del Bosco
Castiglion del Bosco

And we thought that Castiglion del Bosco just made a killer Brunello.  Lucky for you, they’ve expanded into hotels with super luxe rooms, private villas and your very own castle with their eponymous name.  There is not one bad room in this entire resort located in the heart of Brunello wine country.  The rooms are huge – at least 900 square feet - and are so comfortably furnished, it is tempting never to leave.  Except for maybe excursions to the infinity pool overlooking wine country and spa treatments inspired by what else but wine.

Four Seasons, Florence, Italy
Four Seasons, Florence, Italy

In one of the most romantic cities in the world, hotel options got a whole lot plusher in Florence when the Four Seasons moved in.  Set in a historic Medici Palace, the restoration of the hotel took over 7 years to recreate just how noble life must have been in the Renaissance times.  Think frescos that belong in a museum, original tile floors and rooms that are not at all European size to set the scene for some of your own private renaissance, if you know what we mean.  Where hotels were once secondary to your Florence experience, the Four Seasons is now part of your cultural enrichment and an oasis with its five hectares of private park right in the middle of the city.  For those who want to (over)indulge, head to their spa for the 24-karat gold facial.  For anything goes in these new Renaissance times.

Romaneira – Quina dos Sonhos, Portugal
Romaneira – Quina dos Sonhos, Portugal

The most off-the-beaten path Western European country, Portugal has history that pre-dates London, Paris and even Rome.  For the in-the-know traveler, that means the authenticity of the experience is retained, which is never more the case than at Romaneira.  Situated in the Duoro Valley in the Portuguese wine region, Romaneira is easily one of the top 5 hotels in the world, where like Sting sang, “Every little thing they do is Magic”.  A few years old, it still remains under the radar, even after getting props from Andrew Harper.  Our parents hotel though this is not; the chicest traveler will enjoy immersing themselves in this super-stylish yet classically beautiful abode.  The food is also part of the unique experience.  Romaneira may be one of the few five-star hotels that doesn’t have a restaurant.  Instead, they create the restaurant experience for you, chauffeuring you via golf cart to a private candlelit beach dinner, white-table-clothed lunch by the pool or sumptuous meal in your gorgeous suite.  An experience here is custom made, just for you.

Mandarin Oriental, Paris
Mandarin Oriental, Paris

Asia arrived in Paris last year, and what an entrance the Mandarin Oriental has made.  It’s a small fortune to rest your weary head at the Mandarin, but it’s a value in room size and amenities among the Parisian luxury hotel set.  And in signature Mandarin Oriental fashion, its service is impeccable but yet somehow still down-to-earth and gracious.  If you’re lucky, Paris will always be on your annual travel circuit and if not, the Mandarin Oriental is just another reason to make sure it is this next year.
