Best Places to Stay in Santa Monica

The Proper Hotel: Santa Monica

Santa Monica isn’t just for visiting; now you can stay in a Proper Hotel. That just happens to be the name of the newest luxury hotel, designed by Kelly Wearstler, known for her chic interiors.

Proper Hospitality is the company driving the vision behind the hotel with one goal in mind: creating a unique experience that can be enjoyed by both tourists and locals alike. And having already designed for celebrities like Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz, and Gwen Stefani, Wearstler knows a thing or two about putting a room together. Now, on a beachfront city just outside of L.A., she’s put up 271 of them.

Her design for Santa Monica’s Proper Hotel is that classic California cool that can only be found in SoCal (no offense, San Francisco). Tons of natural lighting, tan hardwood, and a perfectly Spanish-designed exterior, the Proper Hotel exudes the sunny, happy, and calm attitude that California is known for.

The food is on par too. Though surfers are known for their love of food trucks, the Proper will offer a more refined menu with three restaurants: Onda, Palma, and Calabra Rooftop. Onda, the creation of renownedchefs Jessica Koslow and Gabriela Camara, uses SoCal’s famous ingredients (including, of course, some Latin influence) to make dishes ready to impress film producers and movie stars alike—considering the hotel’s location, that part’s a must. While Palma is great for 24/7 room service, the real attraction is the Calabra Rooftop. Drinking a custom-made cocktail against a Santa Monica sunset may not make you an A-list celebrity, but it will definitely make you feel like one.

Finally, no hotel so close to L.A. would be complete without a wellness center. There’s a gym to work up a sweat, an outdoor center for the yoga moms, and a rooftop pool for everyone in between. The Surya spa is led by Ayurvedic guru Martha Soffer and offers massages, oil treatments, yoga, and meditation. After all, when in California.
