Your baseline expectation for travel is high. How high? Well, let’s just say that an at-your-service-butler qualifies as standard fare. For a place to really impress you, it’s got to be special, and not the kind of special that money can buy. Authenticity should ooze from every detail, from the intricate hand-carved woodwork to the original stone turret architecture to the great hall, where a knight in shining armor could arrive at any moment. Enter Adare Manor, situated in – and named after – the most quintessential of Irish towns. Complete with centuries-old thatched-roof cottages, stone buildings and medieval monasteries on the banks of the River Maigue, Adare is officially regarded as Ireland’s prettiest and most picturesque village. And while it’s not certain how they tallied that particular poll, it definitely has our vote.

Whether you’re sampling an elevated Irish menu at The Wild Geese or sipping a pint of Guinness among the locals at Pat Collins Bar, this is pure Emerald Isle territory. Did we mention that Adare Manor is an actual castle manor home with the modern luxury of its very own Robert Trent Jones-designed 18-holer? The rooms were decorated to spec by nobility, the Lady Caroline Wyndham. If only walls could talk – Adare is firmly on the luminary map, with fans from Bill Clinton to Prince Albert of Monaco, who has been known to forego his own castle to hole up here with Princess Charlene. Now that’s authentic.
