Kate Middleton in Mustique

A Royal Romp

The escape: Mustique

Romantic retreat: Prince William, Kate Middleton, and the royal baby bump stayed in a five-bedroom Balinese love shack.

Island style: Money can’t buy you love, but it can buy almost anything else, including a paradise island. Lord Glenconner bought and developed the Caribbean isle in 1958, gifting a part of it to Princess Margaret – Will’s aunt – on her wedding day. (Note to self – add private island to future wedding registry.) Rumor has it that the Princess and the Lord partied in their birthday suits and threw some wild beach bashes during the swinging ‘60s. Today, the island’s posh residents and shareholders, who include Tommy Hilfiger, Mick Jagger, and David Bowie, form the private Mustique Company, which welcomes tight-lipped big spenders to stay exclusive and paparazzi-free. Privacy comes at a price, but that hasn’t stopped generations of royals and celebs, from Hugh Grant to the Beckhams, to break open their piggybanks to get away from it all on Mustique.

Royal residence: Les Jolies Eaux, Princess Margaret’s vacay villa, was regifted to Viscount Linley in 1996, who decided to cash in by putting it on the market. Those with deep pockets can now rent the villa for 18–28K a week. Talk about the gift that keeps on giving.
