What to Watch on Netflix: Tiny Pretty Things

As part of our wellness theme this week, we thought that a drama about ballet, that’s a cross between Black Swan and Gossip Girl, would fit right in. Just watching these dancers is workout enough. But seriously though, these pretty ballerinas are world-class athletes, and they are hangry. All of which makes a perfect combination of drama to binge-watch this month.

Tiny Pretty Things was made for that night when you have nothing to do but grab a bowl of popcorn and watch a show in its entirety. Much like Pretty Little Liars, Tiny Pretty Things keeps you on the edge of your seat with mystery and drama unfolding, and yet also provides a pleasantly glamorous insight into teen ballerina angst. The perfect mix of soap and satire, Tiny Pretty Things doesn’t take itself too seriously, but the characters have the right amount at stake.

Set at an elite Manhattan ballet academy, extraordinarily toned and flexible ballerinas and ballerinos plié and tendu their way through school as they become enmeshed in saucy and at times political scandals. The drama starts in the first episode when star dancer, Cassie Shore, falls (or maybe is pushed?) down four flights. A new pupil from the wrong side of the tracks, Neveah Stroyer, is immediately admitted to replace her. Many of the haughty, self-important dancers don’t respond warmly to her introduction, and Neveah, who lacks proper training, struggles to fit in.

Tiny Pretty Things chronicles the excruciating life of a ballerina at dance school, where just fitting is a full-time job. However, despite all odds, Neveah advances and a whole host of secrets and stories unravel. Not only is the story captivating, but the dancing is unbelievable, which is unsurprising considering that Neveah is played by Kylie Jefferson, one of Debbie Allen’s prodigies. The show is worth watching just for her. Plus, if you’re looking for a little inspiration to get your butt moving, look no further.
