You know you’ve made it in travel when you think of Johannesburg as a sort of flyover city, en route to your lifetime safari. That is, unless you stay at The Saxon and work off the jet lag at their world class spa. It is the sleeper hit of any Africa trip.

There are hotel spas, and then there is the spa at The Saxon. Voted Africa’s best hotel spa in 2023, the Saxon’s spa is in a league of its own. Not only because of its very enticing and extensive treatment menu, but because it is simply peaceful and gorgeous. If you’re wanting to relax in a serene setting, make your way to Johannesburg immediately. You won’t regret it.

Location, Decor, and Atmosphere

While The Saxon is located in the busy South African city of Johannesburg, it is tucked away in the affluent, and very leafy suburb of Sandhurst. Even better, the luxury hotel is surrounded by 10 acres of private, wooded land. Traffic noise and crowds won’t reach you. In fact, you’ll just forget that there’s a world outside The Saxon – especially when you visit the spa.

The Saxon’s spa, with its minimalist interior decor, neutral tones, water feature, fireplace, and outdoor stone garden is an oasis of tranquility in the middle of an already-restful setting. The plush chaises longues that are dotted throughout the facility – and their plumped-up cushions only make it easier for you to let go. But the icing on the cake are the enchanting fragrances that fill the air: rosemary, eucalyptus, rose and jasmine petals, and pomegranate blossoms, among others. You’ll feel your blood pressure decrease even before any of the wellness professionals get their hands on you. Now, that’s great value.

The Treatments

While the facility is seductive, you’re here for the treatments. And there are enough of them for you to fill your days. Facials and massages of every sort are on offer, as well as body masks and body scrubs. Even the manicure and pedicure offerings are abundant. That said, the Saxon Signature Journeys and the Saxon Signature Packages are the most comprehensive and include a mix of body and facial treatments with sleep therapy, cupping, and mindfulness sessions, among others. Some even include healthy lunches, smoothies, and juices. You’ll come out of the spa feeling less like a person and more like a smooth and glowing rag doll. Isn’t that everyone’s dream?

The Saxon

The Saxon comprises 53 luxury suites and three stand-alone villas (each able to sleep 14 guests) for those who require more space and more privacy. The luxury hotel is also home to several dining and drinking venues. QUNU, serving locally inspired dishes made from seasonal ingredients, is our favorite. There’s even a vegan menu.
