Silversea Caviar on Demand

Christine Drinan, Founder

Well before Tom, Martha and Kendall set sail this summer on the Med, the OG of luxury cruising earned its designation as the leader of the pack. There are many reasons Silversea is a top cruise option, and one of them is because of their caviar on demand program. And they mean it; we hit the caviar at least twice a day on our cruise. Silversea’s food shined bright in many aspects. The caviar on request was just one of the highlights of the culinary experience on board.

A Family Cruise of a Lifetime

This past summer, my family and I (which ranges from ages 4 to 85 years old) went on our first cruise of three generations. I’ve been on superyachts with friends in the past (or boats as they’re referred to). However, I had never been on a cruise. When you’re trying to move diverse ages with various degrees of mobility though numerous countries, a cruise ship becomes the most optimal way to make that happen. When you’re planning a trip to Scandinavia, it is tough to beat Silversea.

Besides traveling in style, the other aspect that was important to me was that Silversea provided all ages with a rich and authentic cultural experience. My overall goal was to fulfill my Dad’s dream to see Scandinavia. It was a bonus that on our routing with Silversea, we could bring the family to my sister-in-law’s homeland of Lithuania for the first time. In addition to the destinations themselves, I wanted my niece and nephew to experience something other than a kid’s club and beach on this vacation. As their aunt, I think that it’s my responsibility to open their horizons. They are American, but their heritage is over 50% European. In general, European families approach family vacations from more of an immersion standpoint. I am of the philosophy that certain vacations shouldn’t revolve around what the kids want to do. Instead, I wanted to show the kids a vacation that highlighted what a destination has to offer. In other words, I wanted to show them the world. That’s why Silversea aligned the most. Besides Silversea’s food, Silversea is known for their on-shore activities. So with that, our party of seven embarked on a family cruise of a lifetime.

Silversea’s Culinary Program

I did a lot of research prior to taking my parents on Silversea’s food offerings. For me, it was one of the most important aspects of the cruise experience. I think that almost every time we spoke about this family vacation, my parents asked about Silversea’s food. Most of their friends and our family end up on the mass cruise ships where it’s 24/7 buffets. That all-you-can-eat format is a non-starter for me, as someone who has frequent modifications and special requests. What I appreciated about Silversea’s food is that whether it was Italian, sushi, cafe bites or European cuisine, buffets were minimized.

When there was a traditional “Sunday brunch” the day we were at sea, it was one of the top brunch buffets I’ve ever experienced. Besides caviar, there was Maine lobster, Alaskan king crab, and a massive raw bar. There was a whole table dedicated to freshly made bread. Rooms had cuisine from Japanese to Italian, and traditional breakfast. And that dessert buffet was something else, with at least 30 beautifully baked selections.

All-Caviar, All the Time

I actually came upon the caviar on request offering by accident. It was maybe one week before we were set to leave, and of course, I did my daily research of Silversea’s food. I love to study menus, so prior to the cruise I looked up every single restaurant on board and plotted our meals. The caviar benefit was actually buried in some Reddit thread that I missed in my months of research. But there, in black and white, was almost an afterthought that Silversea offered caviar on request, 24 hours a day. So, think of this as my public service to the world about Silversea’s food that they offer caviar whenever you want it.

And they mean it; on arrival, I mentioned my caviar obsession to my butler who made sure caviar was always within reach. In fact, within minutes of arriving, there was Champagne and caviar on blinis as a welcome. So at least twice a day, I indulged in my favorite food. I had caviar on pasta, pizza, lobster, crab, and right out of the tin. I even got the whole family into it on our baked potatoes at The Grill restaurant.

Memorable Caviar Dishes

Besides adding caviar to my dishes, there were so many beautiful canapés, appetizers and entrees that had caviar incorporated in Silversea’s food. I think one of the dark horses of dining on Silversea is the Arts Cafe. This was the drop-in casual cafe for the ship, where I would often find my parents enjoying a coffee and socializing with the staff of Silversea. From morning until evening, the Arts Cafe served light meals and snacks that are updated throughout the day. The morning had grab and go breakfast sandwiches, coffee and teas. At lunch there were sandwiches and sweets. There’s also a lovely afternoon tea service with scones and savory bites.

My favorite time of day though was when they changed over to evening canapés around 5pm. I looked forward to seeing what beautifully crafted hors d’oeuvres they offered with caviar along with gourmet cheese plates. I’m still dreaming of the canapés with artichoke and caviar, and caviar and lemon creme fraiche. My six year old niece even tried caviar for the first time. Luckily for her parents she hasn’t yet quite acquired the caviar taste of her aunt. I’m working on it though.

A Booking at Silver Note is Essential

I’ll go into more of the dining when I share my thoughts on our Silversea review. For how though in focusing on caviar, the other restaurant that I thought excelled was Silver Note. There were no reservations left by the time we tried to book, before the cruise. However, as with most of the restaurants, once you’re on board, Silversea will do everything in their power to get you into your top choices. For Silver Note, we brought the kids, as we always ate as a family. The team accommodated our 4- and 6-year-old by bringing in pizza and fries from the other venues. This meant that we could enjoy the small plates of gourmet food created for Silver Note. Two dishes that stood out on Silversea’s food menu included the caviar on scallops and beurre blanc, and a caviar and crab bite. Silver Note was one of my favorite dining experiences on the entire ship.

So, even if I didn’t know about the Silversea caviar offering, Silversea’s food has caviar integrated into their menus. Like all Silversea ingredients, the caviar was top notch. The various iterations on board were from sustainable brand Ars Italica Oscetra. Silversea’s Ars Italica provenance is from sustainably farmed sturgeon to northern Italy. Nowadays, some of the best caviar isn’t in the polluted Caspian. Instead, it’s made in places like Italy, France, California and even Uruguay. Ingredients are everything, and Silversea’s food was exceptional.
