Being recognized as one of the top luxury hotels in London is like being declared the best-dressed person at the Academy Awards ceremony – the competition is so stiff, it’s nearly impossible. Yet, Claridge’s (just like Jessie Buckley this year) has done it.
The five-star property is undeniably the hotel of choice for anyone seeking a traditionally British opulent experience. But apart from the extreme level of luxe and the gorgeous decor, Claridge’s has been known for two things, mostly: its impeccable doormen and its afternoon tea. That is, until last January when the establishment opened its own bakery. Now, it can add killer sourdough and top-notch jam tarts to its flawless reputation.
Where Is Claridge’s Bakery?
While it’s hard to pass the opportunity to walk into Claridge’s via its grand entrance (the Art Déco revolving door and the doormen are nearly irresistible), that’s not where the bakery is. Claridge’s Bakery is in the back of the hotel, on Brook’s Mews. You can’t miss it – there’s a menu by the front door, a large mat at the entrance, and an old-fashioned bike with a basket full of loaves artfully leaning against the wall. Oh, and the window is full of baked goods – that’s a surefire sign you’re in the right spot.
What’s Special About Claridge’s Bakery?

While Claridge’s Bakery is owned and operated by Claridge’s, it is independent from the hotel. That means that, even though the space looks very chic, you don’t have to dress up to come in. You can stop by while strolling the streets of Mayfair, grab a treat, and get back on your way. It’s just like any regular bakery.
What’s not just like any regular bakery, however, is the quality of the products. World-renowned chef and baker Richard Hart is at the helm of the bakery, along with head baker Frederic Doncel‑Latorre. Together, they offer quintessential British baked goods that can rival any of the French stuff everyone’s always raving about. In short, if it’s a croissant or a pain au raisin you’re looking for, you’re in the wrong place.
What’s On The Menu At Claridge’s Bakery?

Being an icon of British culture, it only makes sense that Claridge’s’ bakery focuses on British specialties. And it’s not just sweet delicacies on the menu – there are savory bites to enjoy too.
The menu is short and simple. It includes six varieties of breads, seven savory items, nine sweet treats, tea and coffee, and what the bakery calls “home essentials,” i.e. butter, milk, and eggs. That way you can check off some items from your grocery list while you indulge.
Although the sourdough bread has been the talk of the town since the opening of the bakery, there are a lot of enticing items, including Marmite cheese straws, Claridge’s sausage rolls, and Jammy dodger tarts. And for those who never miss an episode of The Great British Bake Off, this is your opportunity to try out the famous Bakewell tart. You won’t regret it.
