Galavante Tastemaker Mia Ljungberg Nevado, founder of the LookUp Movement, was born in Denmark. She lived in Copenhagen for many years, before moving to Ecuador then to the Hamptons. She is now based in Stockholm, Sweden, but she always loves to visit Copenhagen for its “hygge” coziness and its joyous atmosphere. This is Mia’s family-friendly guide to a fairytale vacation in the cozy capital of Denmark.
About Copenhagen
Copenhagen was recently voted the world’s safest and most livable city, with clean air and green spaces. It is also home to some of the the world’s best restaurants, including Alchemist, Geranium, Kadeau, and Noma just to name a few. Former US Ambassador to Denmark, Rufus Gifford, once perfectly said, “Copenhagen is like Disneyland for grownups.” I couldn’t agree more.
The Danish culture is very much about community. So, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, which also makes it easier to slow down and enjoy this beautiful capital of Denmark. What I love most about Copenhagen is how easy it is to get around — whether by bike, on foot, by car or by public transportation. Copenhagen is surrounded by parks and water and it’s hard to not fall in love with its charm and beautiful architecture.
Where To Stay: Nimb Hotel
My absolute favorite hotel when visiting Copenhagen with my family is the cozy Nimb Hotel, an SLH Hotel. It is located in the heart of the town, inside the historic, third-oldest amusement park in the world — Tivoli Gardens.
Nimb Hotel is named after the famous restaurateur couple: Louise and Wilhelm Nimb, who built it in 1909. They built it in the Neo Mudeja carnival style, making it one of the most iconic buildings in Copenhagen. With only 38 rooms and suites, the hotel feels very intimate. The rooms are stylish, with the very best of Danish design, and lush terraces filled with greens and flowers overlooking Tivoli Gardens. The hotel offers a high-quality wellness club and spa. It’s the perfect place to recharge after a day in Tivoli Gardens.
Entering the Nimb Hotel feels like being a part of fairytale. It is a place that awakens the inner child, because it’s impossible not to step inside the Tivoli Gardens when staying here. One of many perks of staying at Nimb Hotel is that the entrance fee, unlimited tour pass, and live concert tickets are all included in your hotel stay.
The Nimb Hotel is not just for families. It is a romantic hotel for couples as well, and the same is to be said about Tivoli Gardens. There is something for all ages, from Michelin-Star cuisine and lush gardens to roller coasters.
Food + Drink
Nimb Hotel also has several great bars and restaurants. There’s Brasserie Nimb (serving delicious French cuisine), and Fru Nimb, named after Louise Nimb (which offers the classic Danish open sandwiches “smørrebrød”). Nimb also has a wonderful open-air rooftop terrace with a bar and pool, with beautiful views of Copenhagen and Tivoli Gardens. Inside Tivoli Gardens, Nimb Hotel has the Japanese Pagoda, where they invite some of the world’s best Michelin Star chefs to cook in their restaurant.
Service
When I asked my sons to describe Nimb Hotel with one word, they said “marvelous,” and I must agree with them. This place is like no other hotel, and the service and attention to detail is really what makes this place unique. Maria, the GM, spreads warmness at Nimb, and we feel it everywhere throughout the hotel. Maria and her team go out of their way to make sure everyone, no matter age, feels welcomed. They take the time to be playful and helpful with the guests, which is a true luxury nowadays. It is also a reminder of just how much the personal touch means. They love surprising their younger guests with treats, and thoughtful presents to make their stay even more memorable.
My Sons’ Must-Do’s When Staying At Nimb Hotel
- Enjoy a Shirley Temple (mocktail) in the American bar
- Watch the Tivoli Gardens Fireworks from your personal hotel terrace
- Take a dip in the rooftop pool after a day in Tivoli Gardens
Mia’s Must-Do When Staying At Nimb Hotel
- Enjoy a Signature Nimb massage that includes a steam bath in the Moroccan Hammam, followed by a 90-minute Balinese-inspired massage.
- Take in a live concert in Tivoli Gardens at night from your own personal terrace overlooking Tivoli Gardens.
- Indulge in a cozy dinner on the terrace at Nimb Brasserie overlooking Tivoli Gardens.
Tivoli Gardens
Tivoli Gardens opened in August 1843, and it’s the third-oldest amusement park in the world. It is said that Hans Christian Andersen, who was a regular, was so taken by the beauty of Tivoli Gardens that it inspired him to write The Nightingale. Even Walt Disney visited Tivoli Gardens many times. Apparently, he was so inspired by the mood and atmosphere when he visited, that he went on to open Disneyland.
Tivoli Gardens is a treasure to the locals too. Many locals, both young and old, buy a yearly membership just to access the beautiful gardens and restaurants. It’s also the place to enjoy the many live concerts. There are 25 rides in the park and the most iconic is the old roller coaster “Rutchebanen,” that has been going since 1914. And yet, it’s my son’s favorite ride.
Other Tips for Family Activities Nearby
For The Book Lover: University Library
I recommend a visit to the newly-renovated University Library that was founded in 1861. It was open for 148 years before it closed for renovations, and recently reopened for the public. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in Copenhagen, filled with history and, of course, books. The University Library offers guided tours, which include a visit to the former university prison. This was where students were sent for misbehavior or missing deadlines on their homework (back in the day).
For The Sweet Tooth: La Glacé Conditori
After visiting the library, stop by the most famous patisserie La Glacé Conditori, founded in 1870. Both H.C. Anderson and Karen Blixen were regulars, and the interior has stayed more or less intact for almost 150 years. Our personal favorite is the Othello cake, named after Shakespeare’s play. The Othello Cake consists of custard cream, a macaroon bottom and chocolate icing. Decorated with a marzipan border, pistachios and butter icing swirls, it is best enjoyed with their signature home-made hot chocolate, served with whipped cream.
For The Art and History Lover: Glyptoteket 1879
Glyptoteket 1879 is one of the most beautiful museums of Denmark. It displays ancient and modern art, and has a beautiful lush winter garden with a great cafe. It was founded by beer brewer Carl Jacobsen, founder of the famous Carlsberg Beer, and offers more than 10,000 art and theological objects, which cover a span of 6,000 years.
For The Animal Lover: Copenhagen Zoo
The Copenhagen Zoo was founded in 1859, and is one of the world’s oldest zoos. Better yet, it has no less than 4000 different animals. It is located in a beautiful park, in the lovely neighborhood of Fredriksberg.
For The Flower Lover: Tage Andersen Flower Shop
Tage Andersen’s “Floral World” is an haute couture of floral designs and unique interiors. His cozy gallery is a must-visit when in Copenhagen. It is like stepping into an enchanted garden.
