There are luxury hotels, and then there are Rosewood hotels. The hospitality brand’s five-star and one-of-a-kind properties are some of the dreamiest on the planet (we see you, Hôtel de Crillon in Paris). Luckily, for all the travelers who like to indulge, there are a good number of them spread all over the world – 41 hotels on five continents, to be exact, and more opening every year.
This year, Rosewood opened its very first ultra-luxury hotel resort in Japan. And not just anywhere in Japan, but on the lesser-known island of Miyakojima. Looking for an opulent retreat well away from the rest of the world? Rosewood Miyakojima will definitely deliver.
The Setting
Miyakojima, AKA Miyako Island, located in the East China Sea, is nowhere close to Japan’s main island of Honshu, where Tokyo is located. In fact, it’s a two-hour flight south-west from the capital. And while that might seem too remote for comfort, there’s a trade-off to this seclusion: the island’s beaches are extraordinary, and the snorkeling and diving opportunities are phenomenal.
Rosewood Miyakojima Overview
Rosewood Miyakojima, open since March 5, 2025, is a waterfront property that has direct access to one of the island’s famous white-sand, turquoise-water beaches. Although, if you don’t want to swim in the waters of Oura Bay you can opt to relax in the infinity pool that overlooks the beach. You do you.
There are a total of 55 accommodations at Rosewood Miyakojima, as well as two restaurants (one serving Italian fare, the other specializing in local seafood), one poolside bar, an upscale spa, and a kids club.
Accommodations
The resort comprises 52 ocean-view villas and three waterfront houses, all of which were designed by renowned Dutch studio Studio Piet Boon, with Japanese minimalism in mind and a nature-first approach. The neutral colors, the use of natural materials, and the high-quality furniture create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility that should soothe even the most anxious of travelers. The island’s natural beauty, visible from every accommodation, is a huge part of the tranquility of this Rosewood property. You’ll never want to leave.
The 52 villas (of which there are four types) range from 645 to 968 square feet of space. Each one comes with a private pool, a spa-inspired bathroom, and the larger ones also come with a private garden.
All three houses offer between 1614 and 2152 square feet of space — that’s a whole other Rosewood masterpiece. The houses can host up to five guests. Each one comes with two bedrooms, a private pool, a service kitchen, and a dining room.
The Spa
The Asaya spa consists of six treatment rooms, a sauna and steam room, and a hydrotherapy facility – everything you need to relax to the max. The treatments, many of them inspired by the island’s landscape and culture, include massages, facials, sound therapy, and more. For those who like to add a little exercise to their vacation, there are yoga, stretching, and aqua classes. One-on-one training is also available for travelers who really want to sweat it out.
Cultural experiences
If you ever tire of lying by the pool, or swimming in the bay’s turquoise waters, Rosewood Miyakojima has got you covered. The resort organizes cultural and outdoorsy experiences ranging from weaving to spear fishing, snorkeling, and pottery. You’ll meet locals and will surely learn something new. How’s that for a well-rounded vacation?
