On the Horizon: Americans Will Need to Register Before Traveling to Europe

europe1

There are many things that come with being a seasoned jet-setter. Being organized (we know you’re a packing guru), being spontaneous, being able to adjust to last-minute changes – those are all great traits to have. But being armed with knowledge about travel paperwork and the most updated international travel requirements – that’s essential. Rest assured, we have you covered.

The State Department recently tweeted about a crucial change to the European travel policy for American citizens. Although this won’t affect your travel plans until 2021, the European Commission have now implemented the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) for citizens of over 60 countries. Worry not, this is not a visa – it’s just a level of added security. What it entails is an automated IT System, through which travelers will register online prior to their trip in order to be granted approval for traveling to most European countries – this includes the 26 countries in the Schengen Zone (France, Germany, Italy, among others). Your ETIAS is then to be presented at the European border along with the rest of your travel documents.

There is a €7 fee for everyone between the ages of 18 and 70, but according to the official fact sheet, 95% of the time, applicants are to expect approval within minutes. And once the approval is granted, it’s valid for three years, and for multiple entries – so you only need to go through the process one time. The Commission have also issued a detailed FAQ regarding the process.

Knowledge is power, and now you’re completely armed. ETIAS or not, Europe awaits.
