The brand behind some of the most luxurious hotels, resorts, and residences in the world is going through a major shift. Mandarin Oriental, previously listed on the Stock Exchange in Singapore, London, and Bermuda, has gone private. Hong Kong-based conglomerate Jardine Matheson has acquired the remaining 11.96% of shares it did not already own for $4.2 billion. This change will likely mean more freedom for the brand to optimize its current portfolio and we can’t wait to see what the future holds. That said, this ownership change won’t matter too much to high-end travelers for now. The brand’s 46 hotels, 12 residences, and 25 luxury homes will remain as opulent as ever.

Mandarin Oriental Through the Ages

Mandarin Oriental is not a newbie on the luxury hospitality scene. Far from it. It’s been operating for over 60 years. The first property, The Mandarin, opened in 1963 in Hong Kong and quickly developed a reputation for flawless service. In 1974, the brand acquired The Oriental hotel in Bangkok and combined the names of the two properties to create the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. And the rest is history. The first US property opened in 1987 and the first London hotel launched in the mid-1990s. Today, the group has properties in 41 locations on five continents and the brand’s golden fan emblem is still synonymous with excellence.

Future Openings

Two new Mandarin Oriental hotels opened in late 2025 — one in Vienna and one in Downtown Dubai. But the brand has much more in store. In fact, there are a grand total of 28 hotels and 19 residences in the pipeline for the next few years, including the brand’s second property in Africa: a hotel in Cairo.

In 2026, we can expect the opening of a hotel in Rome. There’ll also be two new resorts in Mallorca and Bali, and new residences on the Desaru Coast in Johor, Malaysia.

However, the brand’s most anticipated project is the reimagining of Mandarin Oriental Miami and The Residences at Mandarin Oriental Miami. Unfortunately, the launch won’t happen before 2030. That said, there are over 80 Mandarin Oriental properties for you to enjoy in the meantime – and more every year.
