Who remembers the Spice Market restaurant? We know bringing up the once A-list spot is a walk down memory lane for us long-time New Yorkers. And even though we haven’t been there since the early aughts, we still mourned its closing in 2016. But there’s good news, as the old Spice Market is going to rise like a phoenix. The space is ready to make its comeback – and it only took eight years. To be fair, all good things take time, and the new Jean-Georges private club Chez Margaux, should be worth the wait.
What Once Was
Restaurant tycoon Jean-Georges Vongerichten owned Spice Market, but at the time, he was still building his empire. We bring this up because after the Asian street-food-inspired restaurant closed, ownership of the property passed through a few other powerful industry hands. Things come full circle, and the old Spice Market space is his once again. Call it fate. The spot infamous for a hard-to-acquire reservation and high-profile regulars will be all that again. This time, it’s a Jean-Georges private club, and we’re hoping that it comes with all the Vongerichten magic.
The Vibe
According to developer Michael Cayre, the feel of the venue is inspired by Paris’s 1930s glamor and London nightlife. The space is your one-stop shop for a good time, with enough room to fit a private supper club, library, and lounges. There’s also a room dedicated to a caviar-turned-nightclub and private rooms (because anywhere exclusive merits some privacy). The website and Instagram page leaked sketches of some of the rooms. Deep red fabrics, roaring fires, fringed furniture, and animal print seem to live under the glow of seductively low lighting. Of course, real confirmation will come with a visit.
The Food and Drinks
Modern French cuisine will be served at the restaurant, and the lounges will have food with a Japanese focus. For those who are into caviar, you’ll be happy to know that Salon de Caviar will be open from 5:30pm to 10:00pm. Afterwards, it’ll become Guax Guax. This will be a club with DJ entertainment later in the night. You might run into your own Mr. Big here.
The Membership
The new Jean-Georges private club is opening its doors to a younger crowd with discounted membership. If you’re under 32, membership starts with an initiation fee of $1000 and $1800 for annual dues. For 32 and over, the initiation fee is $2,000, while yearly dues are $2600. While an opening date is yet to be confirmed, membership applications are open. Stay tuned for more.
