What to Watch on Netflix This Week: Emily in Paris

We might be a little bit late to the party, but it’s never too late to join Emily in Paris. That’s because the Netflix show starring Lily Collins, which has been referred to as a warm hug for your brain cells, might just be exactly the thing you need right now, i.e., total escapism.

The show follows Collins as she trots along cobblestone streets in stilettos, working at a new marketing job for a prestigious company in Paris. She isn’t perfect and makes the occasional blunder, but she is witty and adorable and just a delight to hang out with while riding out the pandemic. Though at first she makes a few missteps, ultimately her stellar millennial social media skills and propensity for increasing engagement propel her to professional success in Paris. And as remote work has overtaken our lives, Emily’s out-and-about lifestyle is just what we’re looking for.

Emily in Paris is not the earth-shattering drama that is The Queen’s Gambit, nor is Emily a deeply complicated character. And yet, there is something irresistible about her. Though Emily may not reflect what a real French woman looks like, her colorful costumes are impossible to look away from. The whole first season was filmed in Paris, so scenes of pedestrians milling about the Tuileries and images of Emily eating croissants at French cafes fulfill the pandemic-induced craving for everything French.

Emily in Paris is meant for days like these, where the snow outside is knee-deep and the wind makes it 10 times harder to walk a few blocks. So, stay inside with a cup of tea and join Emily as she Instagrams her way around the city, befriending like-minded characters and finding convenient love, all while becoming social media famous. Though her captions are cheesy, Emily updates the Sex and the City trope as a tried-and-true millennial seeking every opportunity to document her life for a captivated following. We get her and we relate, but we will never live her life, and that’s exactly why she is so endearing. Her trials and tribulations never feel unresolvable because they never are, and she playfully entertains our every desire to feel like we are somewhere else.

When the world feels like it’s falling apart, or when you need something to turn on in the background while answering work emails, Emily in Paris is just the right kind of distraction.
