Before Troutbeck became the country escape of your modern-day dreams, it was the kind of place where actual literary legends gathered to exchange ideas by candlelight. Names like Mark Twain, Emerson, Thoreau—no big deal. Originally built in 1765, this 250-acre Hudson Valley estate has been many things over the centuries. To begin with, a private home, a salon for writers and thinkers, and now, a beautifully restored resort in Amenia, New York. Yes, it’s a real place, and no, it’s not far. Now, Troutbeck is the kind of escape that doesn’t make a big deal about being an escape. It just is.

Accommodation

Let’s start with the rooms. They’re spread across three main buildings. The Manor House (old-school charm with serious upgrades), Benton House (your cool minimalist friend’s country house), and Garden House (privacy, nature, the works). You get plush beds, warm floors in the bathroom, and real attention to detail. Think of Malin + Goetz products, furniture that doesn’t feel like it was ordered in bulk, and = just the right amount of quirk. Of course, some suites even come with fireplaces. This is really all you need to survive winter, with a glass of wine and a book you’ll pretend to finish.

Amenities

Don’t worry, this isn’t one of those “come here and do absolutely nothing” kind of retreats (unless you want it to be). There’s a mid-century pool, tennis courts, proper hiking trails, and even Janus bikes for when you feel the urge to pedal out your stress. Inside The Barns, a newly constructed space that opened in 2020, is where you’ll find your wellness space. It has you covered with everything from yoga and Pilates (in a 1,250-square-foot Tall Barn) to massage treatments and saunas (in the Long Barn). And if that’s not enough, make sure to check out their culture calendar before you head there. They have many courses, celebrations, and art events, continuing the tradition of exchanging ideas.

Food & Drink

The dining experience is exactly what you want from an upstate restaurant. Hyper-local without being pretentious, seasonal without being cryptic. In charge of the food is Executive Chef Vinny Gilberti. He’s worked in some of New York City’s most celebrated restaurants—including McNally’s Pulino’s—before joining Chef Gabe McMackin at Clinton Hill’s The Finch, which is what led him to Troutbeck. Whether you’re into oysters or root vegetables (or cocktails made with local everything), you’ll be happy. Bonus points: you can post up with a drink anywhere—fireside, sunroom, even the pool table room—and it just works. There’s even a 24-hour pantry with snacks and drinks, so you never have to ask, “Is the bar still open?”
