It’s refreshing when a restaurant generates buzz because of its merit. This October, Heroes restaurant in NYC opened up in an historic townhome on West Broadway in Soho. However, it doesn’t arrive alone. Heroes is joined by Pearl Box, a cocktail and caviar bar, which calls the second floor of the compound home. It seems though that the founders of Heroes like to do things in pairs. Heroes is by the same group of Tokyo Record Bar and Air’s Champagne fame. This is a first look at their new venture.
Atmosphere
The decor of Heroes is unusual; its main color theme is Grape Ape purple. And that’s not an exaggeration; purple is the color that runs throughout everything from the booths to the plates. The photos I saw previously were not quite my design aesthetic but I will say that in person, it’s not as jarring. In fact, I actually didn’t even really notice the decor when I arrived. Instead what stood out for me was the warm atmosphere the host created, a nice noise level to the restaurant and the good energy of the room. The guests were a combination of neighborhood folks, friends catching up and foodies. And the people who work at Heroes were clearly happy to be there, so any design and decor was secondary.
Food + Beverage
The phrase of “nothing is what it seems to be’ applies to the menu of Heroes restaurant in NYC. There aren’t descriptions other than the main ingredient of the dish. So for example, bread and butter doesn’t tell you that you’re about to have the cross between a popover and croissant, with a rich truffle butter. We skipped out of the simplicity of the description expecting a simple French bread, which was a mistake. I had food envy watching the tables next to us fan over the dish. The theme continues, where the carrots and yogurt sounded straight forward. Instead, the dish arrived in a terrine preparation, wrapped in what I think was cabbage that encircled several types of carrots. This was indicator #1 that there would be more than meets the eye.
We continued on with a grilled alp blossom, which was a cheese dish. Once again I thought we would get a piece of grilled cheese. Instead, there was a melted alpine cheese from Jura that was topped with a crispy toile that was sweet like honey. The dish was topped with delicate flowers, and is another example of how the dishes punch above their weight class. One of my favorite dishes was the crab crepe that was in a light curry foam. I could have drank the foam as a soup and would order it in a heartbeat. My friend ordered the blue fin tuna that was the simplest of the dishes in our meal, but works for those wanting something more straightforward.
Heroes’ Banquet
The main dishes on the “banquet” menu are meant to be shared, and include an Instagram-viral chicken and a ribeye that’s around 13 ounces or so. We opted for the aged fish, where the options were a bass or more rare Japanese Hiramasa. We went for the latter, which was perfectly executed and topped with a chili butter sauce and sautéed escarole. I’m generally not a fan of Hirmasa but I appreciated the perfection of its preparation. The main courses are served with a side salad, and we ordered an extra side of potatoes. The potatoes were everything a roasted potato should be; crunchy and packed with flavor. I also liked the endive side salad that was included, which even in its simplicity was seasoned and dressed just right.
Just Desserts
For dessert, we had the apple tart, which was exactly what I had in the town of Jura in the French Alps. The apples were thinly cut with mandolin, so when they baked they caramelized on top of the thin tart crust. With a side of vanilla ice cream, it took me right back to that summer. They know what they’re doing in the kitchen of Heroes, and I would go back in a heartbeat. Next time though I’ll save room for caviar at their sister cocktail bar Pearl Box, upstairs.
Service
I’ve already said that the service and energy that the Heroes restaurant in NYC team is what makes the atmosphere. They are also passionate about the food and beverage. Our server was proficient in both the dishes on the menu and wine, without needing any notes. The food isn’t straight forward either, and our server could recite the preparation and ingredients like he worked at a Michelin-starred restaurant. The service experience was flawless from start to finish, and punches above its weight class as a trendy new restaurant.
Overall: 7.9/10
