Beefbar NYC

Christine Drinan, Founder

Beefbar NYC has its origins in Monaco and now outposts in similarly glamorous locations like Dubai, Mykonos, St. Tropez, Paris and now, New York. This should pretty much tell you who the clientele is. If you’re up for a big New York City night out or just want to find your man or woman in finance, (more on that next) Beefbar is good entertainment.

Atmosphere

Looking for a man in finance. Trust fund, 6’5″, blue eyes. Not sure if I need to add more than this to describe Beefbar. However for good posterity and those who are not 13 year old girls on TikTok, the days of Dorsia and American Psycho are back. If you still didn’t get any of the references above, I’ll just say that Beefbar is a vibe. I always liked Nobu, which long-occupied the space that now Beefbar calls home. However, where Nobu was Japanese minimalism at its best, Beefbar speaks expensive, glamorous and French. In my opinion, the atmosphere, decor and design of the space of Beefbar NYC has never been better.

A Note About the Bar

I liked that Beefbar flipped the narrative on its layout, and the first room you enter is the dining room. If you’re like me and want to eat at the bar, you actually pass every scene-y table on the way there. The bar itself is tucked into another room, where you’ll find the DJ setting the scene, the main bar and some lounge tables. The Beefbar NYC scene is social; this is one of those places where people actually talk to each other in lieu of swipe right on Tinder. During the week it’s heavy on the finance people, and Thursdays are the big night. The weekends do have some Manhattanites but also plenty of people driving in from the neighboring environs. The scene is entertaining under either scenario.

Food + Beverage

A vegetarian and a pescatarian walk into a place called Beefbar, and are going to give you a food review. This really is what happened, as I showed up with a vegetarian girlfriend and I don’t eat meat. However we still have you covered. We posted up at the bar, made friends, shared food and got their review on the steak. But before we go there, it’s a special kind of place that sells a $500 Porterhouse and $1,000 Tomahawk. Of course this is New York so people are living it up. Now we established that this is a baller spot, I’ll cut to the chase on the steak. The guys next to us were big meat eaters, and they had the filet and New York strip. They both rated their steaks a 6/10. Does this mean you shouldn’t order meat at Beefbar? Not necessarily, however it’s something to take into consideration.

The Dark Horse on the Menu

So now that I’ve established that the Beef part of the bar is potentially underwhelming, I”ll say that the seafood was tops. I started with the passion fruit hamachi tiradito. Every single piece of top quality fish was garnished with the perfect amount of hot sauce, and red onion, atop a tangy citrus base. If I was home I would have drank the sauce right tout of the bowl. For dinner I had the steamed halibut, which was pure protein perfection. I would say that there was no oil at all in this dish. Instead, it was flavored with the cilantro, peanuts and ginger and aper relish. This is one of my favorite fish dishes I’ve had air a long time, and the portion was generous. I added the shiso chimichurri for good measure on the side, which was a perfect compliment. We also had the blistered shishito peppers which were I think flavored with some miso. I would come back again and again for this exact meal. My friends loved the chocolate soufflé as well, which is one of their signature desserts. The one skip though is the corn tempura, which was way too heavy.

A quick note on drinks; their bartenders know what they’re doing. I also like that the cocktail menu riffed on classics. The lobby martini had essence of blue cheese and celery, and was garnished with a grape. Cocktails like their version of the espresso martini were popular and my friend liked hers so much she doubled down. Drinks are as much of a draw as the food for me at Beefbar NYC.

Service

Trendy places with poor service never make it to the medium term in New York City. Yes, a place may be cool, but if your service isn’t tops, you’re not going to last past a summer of everyone in the Hamptons. That is not the case at all with Beefbar, which is why I think they are here to stay. Besides their good location and beautiful space, their service is down. They know what they’re doing at Beefbar to run a top operation. There was no attitude at any of the touch points and the bar team was friendly and made great drinks. I liked it enough to want to return and make it a go-to spot in Tribeca.

Overall: 8.2/10

The weight of this ranking comes from the scene, if that’s what you’re into, and ironically the non-meat dishes.
