The old U.S. Embassy in London (yes, the actual one, complete with a giant golden eagle flapping majestically over Grosvenor Square) has ditched the politics and put on a velvet smoking jacket. It’s now a five-star hotel — welcome to The Chancery Rosewood. The hotel will be opening its doors on September 1, 2025, ready to sweep you off your travel-weary feet.
The place was designed back in the ’60s by Eero Saarinen (the guy behind the TWA Flight Center in New York), and it was all sleek and stately until the Americans moved out in 2017. Then, the British architect David Chipperfield came in with a vision and a whole lot of taste. So, what we’ve got now is part mid-century monument, part Mayfair glam. Oh, and yes — the eagle stayed. Obviously.
Accommodation
Rooms? No. These are suites. All 144 of them. Because regular rooms are for people without gold-plated business cards. The interiors are dreamed up by the French designer Joseph Dirand, who basically took warm walnut, creamy marble, brass accents, and giant windows, and made them all scream “I belong in Architectural Digest!” Some suites overlook Grosvenor Square, others give you views of London’s rooftops. But if you’re in the mood to live large — as in, “I’m-not-leaving-this-room-ever” large — book the Chancery House. It’s basically a penthouse apartment disguised as a hotel suite. You get an enormous living room, a proper library with real books, a dining room for six, a kitchen, and so much light you’ll feel like a plant in spring.
Food + Drink
For dining, they’ve brought in the heavy hitters. First up, Carbone — the legendary New York Italian-American joint with spicy rigatoni and a cult following. Carbone is opening their first European location right here. Then there’s Le Caprice, which Londoners have been sobbing about since it closed in 2020. Well, dry your tears — it’s back. You can once again enjoy its old-school glamour, white tablecloths, and dishes like crispy duck salad and bang bang chicken. The Eagle Bar — named after the restored 10-foot high, 30-foot-wide golden eagle above the building — is perched on the rooftop, slinging cocktails with views of the London skyline. And also in the mix: a new Asian dining concept, and more food and drink spots that haven’t been announced yet, but sound just fancy enough to make you consider wearing trousers with actual buttons.
Wellness
They didn’t call it a “spa.” They called it “Asaya,” because it sounds like a place you go to find inner peace, and emerge glowing like you’ve been lit by candlelight and compliments. There’s a 25-meter indoor pool, which means real swimming, not just floating around awkwardly next to someone doing breathwork. You’ll also find hydrotherapy zones, a ultramodern gym for the overachievers, and five treatment rooms where the magic happens. Here, you can enjoy deep-tissue massages, skin-brightening facials, and those holistic treatments, where you don’t quite know what’s happening, but you leave feeling like you’ve been reborn.
What else?
As if the rooms, the food, and the spa weren’t enough, The Chancery Rosewood is throwing in some extra sparkle. Fancy a little retail therapy? There’ll be luxury boutiques on-site. No need to trek down Bond Street — the goods come to you. And if you’re hosting a dramatic gala or a shockingly chic wedding, The Grand Ballroom fits up to 750 people and looks like the kind of place where someone might waltz in wearing couture and announce they’ve bought a castle. Oh, and for those flying in (which is… everyone), they’ve partnered with Heathrow’s Windsor Suite. That means private airport service, customs without queues, and maybe a flute of champagne before you hit the arrivals hall.
