It used to be that the Julian Robertson hotels were the only game in town. But, while they’re still tops (especially now that these lodges are part of Rosewood), there is a slew of uber-chic hotels that have opened up around the country that have to be on your list. One of them is ROKI Collection in Queenstown, set to open this summer.

The Location

Queenstown, located in New Zealand’s South Island, is famous for two things: its dramatic natural setting and its adrenaline-raising offerings. Because of its situation in the Southern Alps and along the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is one of the few places in the world where thrill-seekers can bungee jump, whitewater raft, zipline, skydive, and even take a ride on a jet boat, all in the space of one day. But once they’ll have had their fill of near-death experiences, those travelers will need a very comfortable and soothing spot to rest. That’s where ROKI will shine.

The Atmosphere

ROKI (pronounced ‘ro-kee’), means ‘tranquil’ in Te Reo Māori, the indigenous language of New Zealand. And ROKI really is all about tranquility.

The extraordinary views of the lake and the mountain peaks, framed by the immense windows are the star of ROKI’s interior decor – as they should be. The designer, knowing that nothing can beat nature’s handiwork, cleverly used a color scheme that reflects the hues of the surrounding natural landscape. With earth tones, soft greens, and dark blues, as well as the use of elegant furnishing, interior designer Virginia Fisher created a modern and deluxe extension of the outside world. It’s the perfect place for guests to cocoon before their next canyon swing ride.

The Suites

ROKI will be home to only 15 suites, allowing guests to enjoy an intimate stay. The accommodations range from the simple two-person, 538-square-foot Junior Suite to the seven-bedroom, 749-square-foot The Grand ROKI Suite. All the suites will have a fireplace, a bathtub and walk-in shower, and, most importantly, a fully equipped mini-bar and lake and mountain views. Priorities, right?

The Amenities

There will be three food and drink options at ROKI: The Library Bar for a libation or afternoon tea with a view; The Terrace for a seafood meal al fresco; and Essence for a gastronomic experience. If you prefer a mountaintop picnic via helicopter, however, that can be arranged, too.

Of course, ROKI is also home to a stunning spa so adventurers can fully relax and recover. The space, inspired by Roman baths, has a heated indoor pool, a hot tub, and several saunas. Needless to say that there will be treatments on offer, including much-needed, post-excitement massages.
