Who said you had to travel to Europe to stay in truly historical hotels? Sure, Europe has its fair share, but we think we’ve found what you’re looking for right here in the US too. Let’s talk about Hotel Bardo in Savannah, Georgia.

History

From the outside, Hotel Bardo is a picture-perfect historical property. It’s a 19th-century Victorian mansion hotel — and it looks it too, in the best way, with its bright red brick and turret. But on the inside, it’s far from outdated. It’s a mix of retro and modern influences — so it’s all very elegant.

Expect a lot of colors, patterns, funky art pieces, materials, and textures, including pink glass chandeliers, stripy tiles, curvy velvet couches, scalloped-trim parasols, and more. The best way to describe it is this: an Instagram version of the early 1960s with a touch of Art Déco.

Accommodation

There are 149 rooms and suites at Hotel Bardo and every single one of them exudes cheery yet calming vibes, thanks to a harmonious pastel color palette. The decor in the accommodations is coherent with the rest of the hotel, but it’s a lot less busy than in the common areas, so you’re not overstimulated when it’s time to catch some z’s.

From the smallest room (around 380 square feet) to the largest suite (1,200 square feet), every accommodation is packed with high-end amenities like Dyson hair dryers, Frette linens, Corpus Bath amenities, and Nespresso coffee makers. But the best of the best is the Bardo Suite, of course, with its chef’s kitchen, turret space filled with an enormous couch, and great views of Forsyth Park.

Food + Drinks

A gorgeous hotel without some excellent bars and restaurants would be all style and no substance – and it’s very much not the case at Hotel Bardo. Saint Bibiana, with its Italian-inspired menu, is where it’s at for breakfast, brunch, and dinner. And, there are two café-bars for your drinking needs. And if it’s a sweet treat you’re after, the hotel even has a gelato cart.

Hotel Bardo also has a very pink members-only space called Club Bardo. Membership at Club Bardo comes with a lot of perks, including pool and fitness center access, and priority dining reservations. If you live near Savannah, take note.

Amenities

The best amenity at Hotel Bardo is the pool area. Not only is it the prettiest one you’ll ever see, but it’s also very comfy with cabanas, sun loungers, and a stocked-up bar. Laze around the pool all day or visit the fitness area and spa for some self-care. Indulge in a wrap, a massage, or a facial – you need to be relaxed before you can enjoy a spritz at the Bibi Bar. And to really mix things up, you can take part in an on-site cooking class at Saint Bibiana. It’s the perfect place to learn how to make pasta from scratch.
