Jean Georges the grill

After 35+ years, Tribeca Grill, one of the OGs of the New York dining scene, has exited stage left. But before you fret about where you’ll hang for the Tribeca Film Festival, it looks like Jean-Georges might give the space a 2.0 rendition.

Who is Jean-Georges?

He may be from France, but he has revolutionized the way New Yorkers eat. Jean-Georges is a world-renowned chef with 14 restaurants around New York City. And it looks like Tribeca Grill may be the lucky 15th. Although nothing has been confirmed, the word on the street is that Jean-Georges has been inquiring about the beloved Tribeca Grill, which closed its doors on March 1st, 2025.

Jean-Georges is no one-trick-pony; his collection of NYC restaurants range from farm-to-table fare at Jojo and Latin-inspired tapas at ABC Cocina, to French-American-Asian fusion at Perry St. It seems like the New American fare of Tribeca Grill may be the perfect addition to his delicious portfolio.

Tribeca Grill History

Since it opened its doors in 1990, Tribeca Grill has been a staple of the trendy downtown Manhattan neighborhood. The restaurant was co-owned by famed restaurateur Drew Nieporent and Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro. If that didn’t give it enough street cred, it had a star-studded list of investors, including Bill Murray, Sean Penn, and Christopher Walken to name a few. Due to its location on the first two floors of the Tribeca Film Center, the restaurant quickly became the illustrious hang out for the who’s-who in Hollywood, during the Tribeca Film Festival each year. But the star power wasn’t limited to festival season. All year round, Tribeca Grill was the go-to location for premieres, after parties, and opening night celebrations. Everyone from Nelson Mandela and Mohammad Ali to Taylor Swift and Billy Joel graced the halls of the cozy brick restaurant before its send-off earlier this month.
