We know that everyone with a camera phone and social media account is a food critic nowadays. But guys like Eric Ripert, Jean-Georges, Thomas Keller and Daniel Boulud have deference to one standard, and that’s the OG of food accolades. The coveted Michelin star is arguably still the universal metric for objectively rating the top culinary experiences around the world. The latest and greatest from Michelin came out this December, and these are the 2024 Michelin-star restaurants in NYC that made the list.
How a Restaurants Earns a Spot on the Michelin List
Before we get into the list, first we had to refresh what a Michelin star really means, and why we need to care. There are five criteria that land you among the 2024 Michelin-star restaurants in NYC, and it’s all about the food. Restaurants are judged on the quality of the ingredients, and what Michelin designates as the harmony of flavors. Next, there’s the mastery of techniques, and the personality of the chef as expressed through their cuisine. Lastly, Michelin isn’t looking for one-hit wonders. They judge a restaurant on the consistency both across the entire menu and over time, which means ordering almost everything on the menu and visiting multiple times. It’s also not just anyone with a strong Instagram or TikTok following that gets to anonymously rate the restaurants. Critics are restaurant industry and hospitality veterans, employed full-time by Michelin.
Of note is that service is not a metric, in the way that chefs are graded by Michelin. So, essentially a place can be as snooty as can be, but if the food is good, they still have a shot at a Michelin star. It’s a little old-school for us, but once again, Michelin is the OG. Also, on the list of Michelin-star restaurants in NYC, there aren’t any places where the service isn’t aligned with the quality of the food. However, when we do reviews at Galavante, service is one of the most important components. From our viewpoint, it’s service that keeps us coming back to a restaurant, even more so than the cuisine.
Restaurants Which Would and Would Not Have Made Our List
We’ve paid our deference to Michelin as the OG of rankings. However, to be honest with you, there are too many spots on the 2024 list of Michelin-starred restaurants in NYC that would not make our list. Le Bernardin, for example, is one of the most overrated restaurants our team has dined at. Ever. Same with Per Se. And don’t get us started on Corima, which is a newcomer this year. However, with equal conviction, we are so happy that the late James Kent’s Saga and Crown Shy continue on. Both are restaurants where the good energy and the love that they put into the food make the experience.
Francie and Torrisi are also two favorites that give the Michelin-star restaurants in NYC street cred in our book. We do think, though, that Café Carmellini deserves a spot, especially if you still have places like Aquavit and The Modern on the list. Also overlooked is the new Bungalow, by star chef Chef Vikas Khanna. But that’s the beauty of the arrival of the latest Michelin-star list; for foodies, it’s another topic du jour at the water cooler.
Three-Star Restaurants
On the list of Michelin-star restaurants in NYC, the highest rating you can get is three stars. For the past twelve years, there hasn’t been a new restaurant to break into the three-star designation. That is, until this year, when Korean-inspired Jungsik made the list.

To be honest with you, we think that Per Se is long past its prime, and Le Bernardin still in our book is overrated.
Two-Star Restaurants
César is new this year, and we’re all about putting that on Galavante’s list in the early new year. It’s also good to see that Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare got their act together and is back on the list.

One-star Restaurants
Last but not least, these are the 2024 Michelin restaurants in NYC earning the one-star accolade this year. We are happy to see that Essential by Christophe is still shining, in spite of its Upper West Side location. The meal at Essential in our book hits all the marks of what a Michelin experience should be, and we hope more people venture Uptown to support this gem.
