Katy Perry & Justin Trudeau

Katy Perry Justin Trudeau

We’d like to thank Katy for hard launching her relationship with a certain former Prime Minister on IG. Even better that it was while they were on vacay in Japan.

Perry has done it all, from her time in space to dating a Canadian prime minister, all while performing as a world-renowned pop star. She’s known for juggling a busy schedule. This trip to Japan is exemplary of doing it all and somehow managing it. The Teenage Dream singer toured in Japan while spending quality time with her new partner and embracing the holiday spirit.

Background

Perry and Trudeau’s love story has slowly been unfolding in front of us. There was some commotion in the early days when the two were publicly divorcing past partners. The public was shocked when paparazzi spotted the pair on a dinner date. The date occurred within the same month as Perry’s separation from long-term partner Orlando Bloom. Public attention quieted down after TMZ captured the date, with glimmers of hope for superfans when sources occasionally reported the duo still in contact. Remember Paris? So, when Perry posted the Instagram photo, we really meant hard launch.

Despite Perry’s post more outwardly courting the new partnership, Trudeau was the first to hint at their time spent together in Tokyo. Two days earlier, he tweeted a thank you to former Japanese prime minister for a sit-down. The thank you coming from both himself and “Katy.”

Maybe Perry was waiting for the green light from Trudeau to officially make things public on her socials, or perhaps the trip itself strengthened their bond. No matter the circumstance, the relationship went from largely private to what is now essentially a Tokyo roadmap for those of you looking to travel like these A-listers.

Where did they go?

Drinks

In Perry’s photo dump of the Tokyo excursion, the fifth slide is an artistically blurred image showcasing the hand of a mystery figure, a large oil painting, and the unmistakable mood lighting of Bar Benfiddich. The bar isn’t exactly a secret. It’s been open since 2013, but reservations aren’t easy to come by. This is most likely due to its intimate seating, with only 15 available slots. However, if you’re lucky enough to snag a spot, you’ll find yourself in an old-world–style joint, outfitted in antiques.

The menu is apothecary-heavy, with many ingredients harvested straight from owner and renowned mixologist Hiroyasu Kayama’s farm in Chichibu. You can order a caipirinha showcasing fresh sugar cane sticks from southern Japan or a mint julep with fresh mint and fennel seeds, personally prepared by Kayama.

Food

Celebrity or not, we know a foodie couple when we see one. Perry even dedicated an Instagram slide to the bouncy nature of the Japanese soufflé pancake, followed by the iconic stack of bacon and egg pancakes from Benizuru Pancake Shop in Asakusa. Employees make the cloud-like puffs in front of you, with options for both savory and sweet.

If you want Perry’s exact order, you’ll watch as your pancakes are smothered in honey butter and hollandaise sauce, topped with thick strips of bacon and a fried egg. If you’re looking for an excuse to have breakfast for dessert, opt for the roasted banana and chocolate pancakes or the seasonal caramel apple.

They also enjoyed a sushi dinner at Kurosaki. If you thought 15 seats was exclusive, try 10. Kurosaki is small and omakase-focused, with two seating areas: the chef’s table and the sous chef’s table for tastings. While rare regional fish cuts add flavor to the chef’s creations, it’s the aged vinegar rice that truly sets it apart, alongside the sake collection. You can expect different seasonal offerings, but past menu items have included soup clams, red sea urchin, and monkfish liver.

Leisure

Perry and Trudeau were spotted in The Infinite Crystal Universe at the teamLab Planets museum in Tokyo. The digital art is spiritually aligned and borders on psychedelic, with vibrant colors and interactive imagery. For example, the water room features projections of koi fish. When guests walk through “the water,” the fish turn into flowers at their touch. Visitors can also jump on wobbly stepping stones, sink into the depths of the black hole room, or explore the waterfall-like art structure illuminated with particles of light. The piece is based on an installation deep within the mountains of Shikoku.

If you continue swiping through Perry’s slides, you’ll find her camera facing front and center at a sumo match in the VIP section. Trudeau and Perry shared a dinner date at the Asakusa Sumo Club Annex. Yes, technically this falls under dining. But when the seating arrangement is theater-style, with plush sofas facing the wrestlers, you know the brawl is the true main event. You’re served a bento box–style meal from the comfort of your seat while learning about the art of sumo, becoming mesmerized by a dancing geisha, and of course, watching ex-sumo professionals display their craft. Who knew watching grown men fight is the perfect accompaniment to dinner? Katy Perry, it seems.
