New York City is having its moment in self-care, as a slew of places focused on wellness have and are opening up in the city. Unlike the traditional spas, a number of these spots go beyond skin and focus on a specific discipline. Stretch*d is a studio that focuses on limbering you up through practitioners who will stretch you out. It feels like part-physical-therapy-studio, part-athlete’s-wellness-studio, where everything is nice, but not over-the-top luxurious. For the signature Stretch*d sessions, you are put into separate, curtained treatment areas – so the space is semi-open.
Locations: The Flatiron and Upper East Side Neighborhoods
Background
Stretch*d has been around since 2018, and was acquired in 2023 by Good Feet Holdings, so the brand is positioned for growth. The founder of Stretch*d is Amanda Freeman, a successful wellness entrepreneur. Amanda founded SLT (which has a cult following of its own) and combined her passion for fitness with her Duke and Harvard Business School degrees. There are two locations in the Flatiron and on the Upper East Side of NYC. Stretch*d is niche – the kind of spot that is comfortable, but not luxurious. The crowd is people who are into fitness first, as opposed to those looking for a pampered, luxurious experience. You come to Stretch*d to achieve specific results around your performance and recovery.
My Treatment:
I didn’t do a traditional stretch session, but instead focused on lymphatic drainage. My face has been super puffy and they had an introductory $59 session Face*ssage treatment. I was hoping for a FaceGym effect, but with the more gentle methods of lymphatic drainage and gua sha. Since it was my first time at Stretch*d, they also threw in a complimentary compression Get Puls*D session. Essentially, they put you in these boots up to your thighs that feel like a blood pressure gauge, but help your lymphatic system. I did mine on the Cryo chair, which puts cold patches on various parts of your body for cryotherapy benefits. They have plenty of toys to help with inflammation, including red light therapy, which you can add on to the main treatments. I actually think this is just as compelling for my personal preferences as the main treatments themselves.
As far as my face treatment goes, I’ll nutshell it: It was lovely and relaxing, but didn’t do much for contouring my face or reducing my puffiness. The add-on toys were more interesting to me.
Overall: 7/10
I wouldn’t return for the facial therapies, but would maybe return for a Stretch*d session. I’ve been lucky though to have top trainers who stretch me out at Equinox, and when I travel to wellness centers like SHA.
