The people behind the most luxurious trains in the world are opening hotels, and we’re here for it. Orient Express, the brand that operates the classic and dreamy Orient Express train, as well as the recently launched La Dolce Vita Orient Express train, has just opened a five-star hotel in the historic center of Rome. As expected, it does not disappoint. The lobby alone will have you weak in the knees.
Orient Express
Orient Express La Minerva opened on April 7, 2025. It is the first Orient Express hotel, but not the last. Later in 2025, the Orient Express Palazzo Donà Giovannelli, the brand’s second hotel, will open in Venice. It’s a big year for Orient Express as La Dolce Vita Orient Express, as their Italy-focused luxury train launched on April 4, 2025.
La Minerva overview
Orient Express La Minerva (La Minerva for short), has a prime location in the Italian capital. The deluxe hotel sits on the small Piazza della Minerva, next door to the Pantheon. Piazza della Minerva, is worth a detour as it’s home to 17th-century Italian sculptor Bernini’s Elephant and Obelisk. Several of La Minerva’s rooms and suites have views on the piazza and the beautiful work of art.
The building that is home to La Minerva is just as remarkable as its location. A former aristocratic residence, the 17th-century palace became a luxury hotel as early as 1811. Today, under the ownership of the Orient Express brand, it continues to provide travelers with a grand place to rest and indulge while exploring the Eternal City.
Rooms and Suites
There are a total of 93 rooms, 32 suites, and four signature suites at La Minerva, all of which are beautifully appointed. No matter if you opt to book the two-person, 270-square-foot Classic Room, or the three-guest, 1160-square-foot Minerva Suite, you’ll get the same elegant interior. Art Déco is the signature style of the Orient Express brand and you’ll find it everywhere at La Minerva. Artist-architect Hugo Toro managed to bring modernity and coziness to the style without breaking the spell. You’ll feel both cocooned in a bubble of sophistication, and transported into 1920s Italy.
If interior decor is less important to you than great views, choose your accommodation carefully. Some of the Deluxe Rooms offer views of the piazza and the Pantheon, but not all. The Stendhal Suite and La Minerva Suite are your best bet for some jaw-dropping vistas.
Amenities
While the spa at La Minerva is still under construction, it will soon offer facial and body treatments, as well as access to a Turkish hammam. In the meantime, there are plenty of food and beverage options to keep you occupied and satiated.
Gigi Roma, the rooftop restaurant and bar serves Mediterranean fare along with great views on the city, especially the Pantheon’s dome. La Minerva Bar, on the ground floor, is a magnificent spot to enjoy a cocktail or afternoon tea in a more intimate atmosphere.
