Marriott To Take In Rosewood

We don’t want to spread rumors (but we do a little). Especially when they involve a luxury beloved like the Rosewood. When you’re doing something right, of course the big players will want to to have a piece. This is the latest on Marriott and Rosewood.

The Email That Started It All

A “leaked email” has circulated in the luxury travel sector after a FlyerTalk user uploaded a document screenshot to the forum. Some speculators have discerned the email as a hoax due to unconventional acquisition language. Others wonder if selling Rosewood assets is an attempt to mitigate the liquidity issues of New World Development, a branch of Chow Tai Fook Enterprises (CTFE) and owner of Rosewood Hotel Group.

Why Would Rosewood Consider Selling?

Rosewood is beloved for having the rare duality of both owning and managing its properties. Sonia Cheng, CEO of Rosewood Hotel Group, is a descendant of CTFE founder Cheng Yu-tung, and her father is a chairman of the family business. Having a direct link to ownership fuels the fire to see a business succeed, perhaps more than most. The empire owns 59 hotels in 26 countries, with 30 new properties currently in development. It’s clear that Rosewood has no plans of disappearing. However, even the wealthiest of the wealthy need liquidity.

That’s the “why,” assuming the rumor is true. But what does this mean for brand identity? Will it get lost in translation? The only way to know for certain is to see how things play out. That said, our opinion (despite the oppositional whisperings of the internet) is that the potential move could be a good one for both Rosewood and Marriott.

Acquisition vs. Brand Integrity

Rosewood comes from a strong foundation, as one of the powerhouse independent luxury collections in the world. It is built on bespoke, place-driven experiences, far different from your typical large-chain model. They focus on design detail and accessorize like no one else. But more importantly, they dial into the community, from local snacks and liquors at the ready in the comfort of your room to hiring locals. It makes sense that Marriott would want a stake in a company with a highly established backbone and a growing real estate portfolio.

As for Rosewood, if Marriott acquires them, they’d catapult to the forefront among the big four in independent luxury. Their competitor, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, is owned primarily by Cascade Investment LLC (Bill Gates), while founder Isadore Sharp has a 5% stake. We don’t think this has diluted the franchise’s brand identity. What’s more, in the early aughts, Marriott’s luxury division formed a joint venture with Bulgari Hotels & Resorts. Since the merger, Marriott has given complete design and brand image freedom to Bulgari. If both a Rosewood competitor with a third-party owner and a previous Marriott adoptee can maintain integrity, then it isn’t so far-fetched to believe the rumor could be mutually beneficial rather than a catastrophe.
