Long gone are the days when castles were exclusively for royalty. Today, there are plenty of châteaux-turned-hotels where those without a title or a double-barrelled name can revel in the luxury that comes with historical properties. And Le Château de Théoule, located on France’s Mediterranean coast, is one of them.

History and Location

Originally built as a soap factory in the 17th century, this property then became a castle when a Scottish Lord took it over at the start of the 20th century. As of spring of 2024, however, the building was converted into a five-star boutique hotel. While you might think that setting up a soap factory in such an elegant building might be strange, know that soap has been a big business throughout the Provence region since the Middle Ages. (Yes, people used soap even back then).

Le Château de Théoule is located in the small and picturesque town of Théoule-sur-mer. Although you have probably never heard of Théoule-sur-mer, know this: it is on the coast, only 6.5 miles from Cannes (yes, that Cannes), and 50 miles from oh-so-chic Saint-Tropez. That means that you get the same sunshine, views of the glittering sea, and glamorous atmosphere — but the crowds are a lot thinner. That’s a win-win if there ever was one.

Architecture and Decor

Le Château de Théoule is comprised of three buildings: the stone castle, an adjacent Art Déco villa, and a fisherman’s cottage. Within the three structures, there are 44 rooms and suites, a spa, a Michelin-starred restaurant, a large outdoor pool, and a private beach with its own restaurant and bar. All the spaces within this luxury hotel perfectly blend Mediterranean decor with Art Déco style to create a swanky yet laid-back atmosphere. We’re talking rattan chairs, mosaics, and striped wallpaper mixed with velvet couches and golden palm trees. How’s that for an unusual combo?

Amenities

If it’s good food you’re after, Le Château de Théoule can deliver. The most obvious place to indulge is at Le Mareluna, the onsite Michelin-starred restaurant where the menu mixes French, Italian, and Japanese culinary influences for a unique meal. The setting is elegant and the food elevated. La Plage Blanche, with its bar, however, is a more relaxed dining option where you can enjoy local cuisine. For drinks and beats only, make your way to the rooftop. This is the best spot to enjoy the sunset over the Mediterranean.

If the pool, the beach, and the bar don’t help you loosen up, the spa will. There’s a large variety of treatments on offer, including massages, facials, body scrubs, hair treatments, and even LED mask sessions. A fitness coach is available for one-on-one training and there are yoga classes if you need a relaxing workout. Both options can be done indoors or outdoors, under the Mediterranean sunshine – you choose.
