Nobu Hotels

What happens when you take a hotel from the 1920s and combine it with Japanese minimalist modernism? You get the re-birth of the Plaza Athenee – Nobu’s first hotel in New York City.

Overview

Nobu is no stranger to the Big Apple. Their two New York City restaurant locations have long been as much of a culinary destination as a who’s who of NYC’s social scene. But now, Nobu is giving the city that never sleeps a chic new place to rest your head with the Plaza Athenee Nobu & Spa New York. The hotel will be giving a modern facelift to the nearly-a-century old building that once housed Hotel Plaza Athénée. The five-star hotel was once a mainstay of Manhattan hospitality, but closed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While Nobu has left an air of mystery around the hotel’s specifics, it’s slated to open sometime this year and promises a blend of  “modern simplicity and European classic architecture.”

You know the saying “location, location, location”? It serves as a ubiquitous rallying cry of realtors, developers, and investors alike. Well, Nobu Hospitality and their partner Asset World Corp definitely heard the call with the Hotel Plaza Athénée. Located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, the hotel is situated in the heart of one of New York’s bougiest nabes. The UES has Central Park, world-class museums, art galleries, and of course, high-end shopping befitting the luxury that has become synonymous with the Nobu brand.

Accommodation

Don’t shoot the messenger, but details about the Plaza Athenee Nobu & Spa are frustratingly slim. Here’s what we know: The hotel is set to have a total of 145 room keys, including suites and a townhouse. Naturally, the suites will have indoor and outdoor glassed terraces and gazebos — because why not? The townhouse, on the other hand, is the hotel’s top-tier travel option and promises to be a private sanctuary with “exclusive service.” We’ll let our fantasies run wild with what that might include.

Dining & Amenities

Don’t worry, we wouldn’t dare neglect to mention the one thing most synonymous with Nobu — the food. The Plaza Athenee Nobu has already confirmed a Nobu omakase experience (fingers crossed for the black cod miso), a bar and lounge, and a rooftop area with panoramic views of NYC that can be used for private parties. The only thing better than drinks with a view? Dinner with a view, followed by a dip in a traditional Japanese Onsen or a visit to the spa and wellness center. And you’re in luck, because The Plaza Athenee Nobu & Spa will have both.
