Let’s not bury the lede; Le Chêne is the best NYC restaurant opening (so far) of 2025. This isn’t a distinction we would give lightly either, but Le Chêne is something special. Few places could have you at bread, and then some.
Atmosphere
It is clear that whoever created the concept of Le Chêne has a high level of taste and elegance. In this case, that’s chef Alexia Duchêne and her husband Ronan Duchêne Le May, who runs the front of house. The polished wood, elegant dining room with paneled walls and Basquiet art convey an elegant French restaurant. In lieu of stuffy and boring, though, the feel is modern and fresh. Unlike other high budget Roman-and-Williams-type projects (which of course are impressive), Le Chêne reminds us that less can be more.
The crowd is also the right mix of people. Of course, there are a few Tier-2 models on dates. But the main crowd consists of beautiful New Yorkers who know their food. Like the decor, it all feels light and fresh, while elegant.
Food + Wine
When it comes to merit, Le Chêne has the foundation of food and wine down to an exceptional level. On my visit recently, it felt like Le Chêne was a seasoned, Michelin-level operation, when in reality, it was just a few months old. I’ve read reviews that lead with the 3,000+ large wine cellar, which of course in itself is impressive. You can blow it out with a 1985 Mouton, which is drinking in its prime for the price of a small car. Or, you can go more conservative with a large selection of wines under the $300 mark. The cocktails were also solid — they make a more than respectable martini to start out the evening.
But I think the hero of the experience at Le Chêne is the food. By pedigree, Alexia Duchêne was a Top Chef France finalist. Of course, this accomplishment doesn’t necessarily translate to a successful restaurant. However, Duchêne has that rare ability to create cuisine exceptionally on a consistent basis, and just as importantly, food that has heart. Every dish that comes out, you is created by someone gifted. Le Chêne is a rare breed that from the start, feels like it is here to stay.
The canapés, which are small-bite amuse bouches, should not be missed. They change seasonally, but the shrimp tartelette has been consistent, and whatever version of beignet is savory, fried goodness. If you’re into foie and beef tartare, this is the place to order it up when it comes to the first course. We also had the razor clams with subtle ginger and lime. From the start, there’s nothing that feels like home-cooking, but rather Michelin-level cuisine. It’s like the bar for French restaurants has been raised with Duchêne’s cuisine.
For the entrées, the signature is the Pithiviers Terre & Mer, a gorgeous puff pastry with pork, smoked eel and potato gratin. We had the special turbot that was in a light cream sauce that I have been craving since. I don’t think I’ve ever had turbot so beautifully prepared. As for sides, the French fries are a must.
Service
This is a case where a team of people, led by husband and wife Duchêne and Duchêne Le May, have created magic. It is rare to see a group of people who are this young and knowledgeable perform at this level of service. It’s also clear that they genuinely love what they do. Observing the dining room is like watching a beautifully choreographed dance, as the servers, somm and Duchêne Le May elegantly work the room. What’s equally rare and impressive is how much fun they have with the guests. While it’s all Michelin-level, it’s never stuffy, pretentious or overly formal.
