There’s a restaurant that’s just been doing its thing since it opened last year, and doing it all under the radar. That’s not to mean that every table isn’t packed and the crowd’s not good. Frena NYC is just playing the long-game and serving up top food without the PR machine.
Atmosphere
Next time you’re in the Theater District or the area once known as Hell’s Kitchen, you do have a choice of a restaurant that’s more than just for convenience. It’s not just the food either; Frena NYC is a restaurant worth going out of your way for. That seems to be with the case of the crowd at the restaurant, who are predominantly New Yorkers. Chic couples on dates and groups of friends gather to fill all the tables of Frena. At Frena, they have achieved that perfect balance of lighting, good volume of conversation and contemporary decor. The room is just pretty, and from the moment you walk in, it’s a place you want to be. Frena is warm, neighborhood-y and intimate, with just enough vibe and people watching to make it interesting.
Food + Beverage
While the atmosphere is a strong suit, Frena has the chance to make it long-term because the food is really good. It’s not Michelin-level but in its category of elevated casual food, it hits all the right notes. Portions aren’t massive but they give you the opportunity to try as many dishes family style as your table can fit. Yes, you can order traditional Middle Eastern mezze at more places than you can count in the city. However there’s something about the hummus, tzatziki and baba ganoush, amongst at least four other dips, that is executed at that next level. There’s a selection of five dips that should be on every table to start, along with their breads. The bread comes out of a wood-fired oven, and the simple Frena bread is a must to scoop up the dips.
The warm small plates are also an unsung hero of the menu. We loved the artichokes and crispy zucchini cakes. Like the Middle Eastern culture, the dishes, including the mains, are made to share. Other highlights for us was the latke crusted striped bass, and Madagascar shrimp Kadayif, which had a creamed corn and lime lobster bisque. The menu is comprehensive with at least 15+ entrees that make Frena NYC a place you can make a staple on your rotation.
Service
Frena has the trifecta; atmosphere, food and service. All are aligned to the goal to create an elevated neighborhood gathering place. The approach to service, which is warm, genuine and professional, is what builds a strong culture of regulars. The Frena team understands the assignment and executes it with high marks. Frena is a restaurant for the rotation when you want a guaranteed good standby meal.
