If there’s a place that looks like the set of the movie Casino, it’s the new Golden Steer in New York City. It’s not just a theme restaurant though; the Golden Steer is a long-time Vegas steakhouse, which has just set down roots in the heart of Greenwich Village. So essentially the Golden Steer is now in the city that never sleeps, with its roots in the other city that never lets you sleep. But now the question is whether the Golden Steer NYC will have just as much staying power as the OG. This is a first look at New York City’s newest steakhouse in the heart of Greenwich Village.
Atmosphere
The original Golden Steer in Vegas was Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and even Elvis’s steakhouse. Open since 1958 and the oldest continually operating restaurant in Vegas, the Golden Steer defines legend. For its New York outpost, its first outside of Vegas, the Golden Steer is now home at the One Fifth Avenue space. Mario Batali’s Otto most notably held court in the location for over 10 years, though there are absolutely no visible remnants of the casual pizzeria. In today’s rendition, the space itself is pure theater with just enough Vegas kitsch to keep it authentic to its roots.
The design firm Modellus Novus incorporated oil paintings inspired by the Wild West into an Art Deco interior. As an homage to its name, of course there are busts of golden steers throughout. Whereas the OG had the Rat Pack in their era, the Golden Steer NYC has had Robert DiNiro and Gwyneth Paltrow notably already stop by for a meal.
Food + Wine
Executive Chef Brendan Scott brings experience from Carne Mare and the late, great Montrachet. Chef Scott’s pedigree lends serious culinary credibility to what could have been a nostalgia play. What it comes down to it at the Golden Steer NYC is that the food is genuinely good. It’s simple and unfussy, but has all the right selections of a good steakhouse. Tuxedoed servers present wet-aged USDA Prime steaks with accompaniments like brandy cream and gremolata.
I was most impressed by the selection of surf options including king crab legs and jumbo Canadian lobster tail. The tableside Caesar is non-negotiable, as is is the Cherries Jubilee. The cocktail program draws from the building’s original tenant, the historic #1 Bar. The #1 Bar which opened in 1934. The fancy cocktails were of course good but I prefer to be a purist and I think the bartenders shine most with drinks like a simple vodka martini.
Service
This is not a bottles and models kind of place. Instead the staff are real career service professionals. We would say the team is as authentic and aligned with the old-school Vegas vibe. Think tuxedoed waiters and security in suits who you know have a story or ten of the notables on the NYC restaurant scene. There is something nice about having old-fashioned hospitality where it’s all genuine vibes.
