Kamala Harris in Chicago

Christine Drinan, Founder

The long-awaited Democratic National Convention is upon us, and the fine city of Chicago is this year’s host. From August 19th to 22nd, past presidents, and possibly a future president, will be in Chicago while the world watches. Tonight, Hilary Clinton and Joe Biden will be the biggest names to take the stage. Of course the most anticipated news is about Kamala Harris in Chicago. It’s all pre-party until the DNC announces Kamala Harris as the nominee for President of the United States.

A World Class City

This isn’t Chicago’s first rodeo hosting political conventions, where through history it’s the 27th time Chicago has been the city of festivities. Notably this is the 12th time for Chicago to host the DNC. There’s a reason why Chicago is such a popular city. First, it has the convention centers needed to hold the crowds. This year’s DNC will be at the United Center, where the Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls play. The United Center can house over 21,000 attendees, and we know that all seats will be full to see Kamala Harris in Chicago.  Then practically, Chicago has the hotel rooms needed, many of which are world class to host any convention with VIPs. Then of course the restaurant scene in Chicago is right up there with New York City, where you’ll certainly see top public figures out and about. So as an ode to both the event and the great city itself, this is where to eat for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Monteverde Restaurant & Pastificio

Cuisine: Italian

If there’s a restaurant that has New York-level Italian cuisine in Chicago, it’s Monteverde. Monteverde is known by foodies as the best restaurant in Chicago for fresh, authentic Italian pasta. The sweet corn tortelli and the cacio whey pepe, their version of the Roman classic, are legendary.

Au Cheval

Cuisine: Burgers + Elevated Diner Food

When you’re in Chicago, it’s almost a requirement to get the meat sweats somewhere. This is the Midwest, and at Au Cheval, they cook up a world class burger in a casual yet cool environment. It’s the perfect place for attendees at the Democratic National Convention, especially journalists, to get an easy bite. Located in the heart of the West Loop, a quick ride from the United Center, it also gets you in the heart of the nightlife in the city.

Swift & Sons

Cuisine: Steakhouse + Seafood

You haven’t visited Chicago until you get a fancy steakhouse experience. Swift & Sons isn’t one of the old classics; it’s actually better. A modern steakhouse, Swift & Sons can do no wrong, whether you’re up for their signature Beef Wellington or the 11 other cuts of steak. They also have a top raw bar and seafood selections. Whatever you order, put it on the side of a magic show. You can get your own private time with the roaming magician, who is just one aspect of the entertainment for the night. With Kamala Harris in Chicago, this is where she should celebrate her big nomination.
