Marina Zoukova

Favorite Destination

Prague, Czech Republic. It’s beautiful, and historical, and many other wonderful things.

Most Exotic Destination Traveled

Bankya, Bulgaria, a small town on the outskirts of Sofia. It's actually known for its mineral springs and medicinal baths, but I particularly enjoyed stumbling across the abandoned mansion of the Bulgarian ex-Soviet leader, Todor Zhivkov, which stands virtually untouched (except by the forces of nature) and is open for exploration to all who know where to look.

Travel Philosophy

There doesn’t always have to be an elaborate itinerary, and most things are more fun if they're spontaneous. Some of the best adventures stem from arriving in a new place, and exploring as far as the eye can see. To me, there’s something especially valuable in making my own travel paths, instead of just googling “Things to do in Phuket,” or wherever. Ask locals for places to go, read forums about what people did when they went there, and if you’re googling anything at all, look up abandoned places to explore (those are more difficult to just stumble across).
