On the Scene

NYC Festival

A Taste of New York
May 23, 2013

The event: New Taste of the Upper West Side

The details: May 29–June 1, 2013, on Columbus Avenue, between West 76th and 77th streets

The scoop: There was a time when the UWS was better known for takeout than dining out. Not anymore. With an influx of top-end restaurants, including Loi, the Boulud empire, and the Smith, the cool quotient of the Upper West Side has spiked. The New Taste of the Upper West Side features the neighborhood’s culinary finest all under one roof – or one tent, actually. Chefs from around the city, from Jacques Torres to Marc Murphy, gather under a grand tent on Columbus Avenue, where you’re invited to eat, mingle, sip wine, and eat some more.

The scene: The festival kicks off on May 29 with Soirée in the Park, an evening of cocktails and light bites from chefs John Fraser (Dovetail), Maria Loi (Loi), and Cesare Casella (Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto), in Theodore Roosevelt Park. The following day, feast at Comfort Classics, hosted by Travel Channel’s Adam Richman, to the rhythms of DJ Phresh. And on Saturday, it’s Best of the West, spotlighting the best chefs of the Upper West Side along with the retro tunes of the 17-piece New York Big Band. Plus, there will be plenty of culinary muscle, like special guest Danny Meyer, who introduced New York to the joys of high-low cuisine, from locavore bone marrow at Union Square Café to burgers at Shake Shack.

Giving back: The festival is as much about cuisine as it is about community. The sixth annual festival will benefit the Columbus Avenue Streetscape Project and the Wellness in the Schools program, which inspires healthy eating and fitness.
