The place: Macchiato
The space: Espresso is pressed to a Euro beat at this glossy Italian coffee shop in Midtown East. To order, you’ll need to weave through suits and shoulder bags to the counter, where well-trained, black-shirted baristas efficiently prepare mostly grab-and-go coffee. Business is tidal, alternatively flooding with customers one moment, and emptying the next. Free seats also appear and disappear quickly. The ones by the front window are best, but the chocolate-wood tables with creamy leather banquettes along the side wall also keep customers cozy.
The beans: Macchiato gets all its coffee custom-blended and roasted by the award-winning Fonté Micro Coffee Roaster. The Seattle-based roaster also supplies numerous high-end hotels like the Four Seasons.
The complement: All pastries and croissants are made in-house, as are the highly popular chocolate cookies. For sandwiches, the egg salad wins fans with its arugula, Monterey Jack, and pepper mayo.
