Best American Food Atmosphere in NYC

The Best of NYC Atmosphere: Waverly Inn

Good for: When you are missing Graydon Carter at Vanity Fair and just want to feel closer to him. Otherwise first dates, 100th dates, birthday celebrations, dinners with friends, or anytime you want a classic NYC scene.

Atmosphere: It’s kind of like the Polo Bar of the West Village, but here, you can drop by and even make a reservation without knowing someone. It feels like a private club with the dark wood, red banquettes, old-school pictorial artwork on the walls, packed tables every night, and if you’re lucky, a seat by the fireplace in the back. On a scale of 1/10, atmosphere is an 11.

Why we like it: There’s a reason why a place this hyped when it first opened has had staying power, and is still a great scene today. If you didn’t get our drift above, the atmosphere is tops – you’ll have a chance to see anyone, from Taylor Swift out with her girlfriends to Ron Pearlman getting a drink tossed on him by an ex-wife.  But atmosphere alone can’t keep people coming back; the food is just classic good American with French influence. This is one of our go-to spots when we just want to be home in NYC.

What to order: The chicken pot pie and the dover sole are pretty much of iconic status on the menu, like it’s Vanity Fair’s “Best Dressed” list. We also can’t pass up an iceberg wedge salad because no one really does a proper buttermilk and blue cheese dressing nowadays.
