As an ode to the Not-So-Dead Sea, this week we reveal the secret to the fountain of youth that models and moguls in the western world have long known about—Mzia Shiman. Aesthetician to the most well-heeled in Manhattan, Mzia has a loyal following of groupies who are obsessed with her skin care regime, as well as Mzia herself. She has worked with the biggest names like Mariah Carey and many more whose secrets she keeps on the down low. Galavante has been a devotee for over six years and had the unique opportunity to sit down with this extraordinary woman that Allure magazine called the “Face Whisperer.” Galavante: How long have you been an aesthetician? Mzia: Oh, you are going to age me. But I’m proud to say I’ve been an aesthetician for over 30 years. I studied medicine in Russia before moving to the U.S. and took that knowledge to my profession as an aesthetician. Galavante: Well, you must have been six when you studied medicine. You are gorgeous. Mzia: You know my age, and it’s a little older than 36. However, I take care of myself, and also my clients, a number of whom have been with me for over 20 years. I love my clients and love to take care of them. Galavante: What kind of services do you offer? Mzia: I work at the OC 61, and tailor every treatment to meet a client’s specific needs. I offer every type of facial–from cleansing to oxygen and microdermabrasion. I also do waxing and laser treatment. I love laser. Galavante: Waxing made you famous, didn’t it? Mzia: Oh no, I’m not famous, but I have been lucky to have been featured for the services I offer. Ages ago, before anyone was doing eyebrows, I was featured on MTV. I also get mentioned in beauty magazines every so often, like Allure. Galavante: To look as good as you, how should we take care of our skin? Mzia: Well, for my skin, microdermabrasion does wonders, but it depends upon the person. Age, skin type, health, genetics, diet, lifestyle and profession all need to be taken into consideration. At night make sure to go to bed with very clean skin and hydrate with a night cream to fit your skin type. Exfoliate your skin weekly and use a mask appropriate for your skin. As a general rule, hydration is key to looking young and maintaining the health of your skin. I recommend all my clients use a hydrating mask once a week, and moisturize daily. I love the Decolor products. Galavante: You must meet some really interesting people, as the best aesthetician in all of New York. What’s your favorite perk from working in the business? Mzia: I think you are biased! My clients are so good to me; I am lucky to have such special people in my life. I appreciate it all. I guess though that your readers would be interested in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. I go almost every year because of my clients. I also have been to Heidi’s Halloween Party here in New York. Galavante: I guess for those of us not on a first name basis, that’s Klum, right? Mzia: Oh yes; she is an amazing businesswoman and mother. Galavante: Just like you. So how do we get an appointment with you? Mzia: Just call the OC 61 and schedule; a friend of Galavante’s is a friend of mine.
