Hamilton Island QualiaHamilton Island Australia - The Race is On
What do you do when you're flush with $1.5 billion in cash after selling your company? You buy a private island, of course. That's exactly what the Oatley family, of the famed Rosemount Estate Winery did, when they found themselves looking for the next move after the successful exit of the family business. An avid family of sailers, they had been admiring an isle with potential since 1983, and the stars aligned for them to purchase Hamilton Island 20 years later and create a high-end resort and yachting community. Off the Queensland coast of Australia, in prime territory as the gateway to the Barrier Reef, Hamilton Island is now the proud host to the largest offshore regatta event in the Southern hemisphere.
From August 16 to 23, the Audi Hamilton Island Race Week will see over 160 boats contend for the grand prize. We'll clue you in – people who yacht know how to party. The week is packed with a full schedule of onshore cocktail parties, black-tie events, fashion shows by Net-a-Porter and the new Mr. Porter, champagne lunches and lavish dinners. Festivities kick off with patriarch Bob Oatley officially raising the flag on Saturday, August 16, followed of course by a gala dinner and fireworks display.
We were intrigued enough at Galavante, along with the chance to stay at qualia, the luxury resort which was built with the goal to be "iconic," to cover the week's events, so stay tuned. We plan to zip around in our chauferred Audi, along with trying to win a Q3 of our own by scoring a Hole in One at the Hamilton Island Golf Course. If that fails, then look for us sipping the Piper-Heidsieck at events all week.
