The place: Boqueria SoHo
The space: Barcelona’s hot Mediterranean sun becomes an oak-paneled glow at this windowless bottle-shaped space in SoHo. Inspired by the best tapas bars in Barcelona, Boqueria puts its diners on a pedestal, or rather high chairs, clustered around the marble bar up front, the 70-seat dining room, and the chef’s table in the back. There, not only can you watch your meal being prepared by chefs, but also select your next course willy-nilly from the glass-enclosed display case.
The ingredient: Boqueria proudly trolls Union Square Greenmarket each week for the freshest produce and “grass-grown” beef, pork, lamb, and poultry. This season, it’s beets, kale, and hazelnuts that show up in dishes like the tortilla del día and palpis a la plancha.
The special: Start with Manchego cheese and dive into the tapas pool of blistered padrón peppers sprinkled with sea salt, bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with cheese, and skewered Colorado lamb.
