Quick: If you were stranded on a deserted island with only five things, what would they be? Got ‘em? Good. Now pack them up, grab your companion (whom we’re assuming is one of those “things”) and head straight to Zanzibar. Sure, it might not technically be deserted – details, details – but if you stay at the soon-to-open White Sand Luxury Villas & Spa, it might as well be. The resort’s 11 two-unit villas are spread out on 10 acres of tropical gardens along Paje’s alabaster sands facing the turquoise Indian Ocean, so the chances of you seeing other people (besides your butler, of course) are practically nil.

Each of the villas has two units – one with a lounge and dining room and the other with the bedroom, bathroom and an outdoor bathtub – that are connected by an exotic garden with a terrace and a private swimming pool. And both are carefully surrounded by lush foliage to up the privacy factor. When it comes to personal space, they’ve really considered everything. Architect Neil Rocher, who is hailed for his eco-friendly designs, headed up the project, so the villas blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings. He also made sure that both units face the ocean, giving you a beach view from every angle.

If you do decide to mix and mingle, you have options. Hit up the resort’s restaurant and dig into freshly caught fish and homegrown vegetables. The menu offers Zanzibari fare (think a cross between African, Indian and Arab flavors) with an international twist, as well as daily tropical juices. There’s also a rooftop deck and bar that’s perfect for kicking back and watching the sun go down.

You can also head to the intimate spa and relax in a tropical garden to the soothing sounds of a waterfall before enjoying a massage that utilizes locally sourced ingredients such as sea salt, cloves and seaweed. Or take advantage of Paje’s year-round winds and shallow waters, which make it a renowned kitesurfing spot. Master the sport at the adjacent Zanzibar Kite Paradise, also owned by the hotel. (That is, as long as a swimsuit is one of the other things you packed.) Afterwards, retreat to your villa’s private swinging day bed to watch the sun go down. Loneliness never felt so luxurious.
