The island: Necker Island (British Virgin Islands)
The celebrity: Sir
Le festival: 66th Festival de Cannes 2013 (through May 26)
Les celebs: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Lana Del Rey, and Baz Luhrmann for The Great Gatsby; Ryan Gosling for Only God Forgives; Matt Damon and Michael Douglas for Behind the Candelabra; Emma Watson for The Bling Ring; Justin Timberlake for Spinning Gold; the Coen brothers for Inside Llewyn Davis; and many, many more.
Le history: La vie en France is far from les miserables. The country of romance, revolution, Moulin Rouge, and champagne became famous for celebrating films in 1946, when the prestigious annual international festival was founded in Cannes. Competing with the Venice and Berlin film festivals, Cannes places great importance on the artistic quality of the films, attracting movie royalty from around the world, plus star-struck fans and paparazzi who fight for a place on the red carpet at the Palais des Festivals. And, of course, beyond the glitz and glam, what everyone’s striving for is the Palme d’Or, Cannes’ highest honor.
Luxe lodging: Hotel Martinez was a top pick among this year’s stars, including Bruce Willis and Bill Murray, while Robert De Niro and Jane Fonda lodged at Majestic Barrière. And Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc is always a Brangelina favorite.
After hours: Spotted around town: Leo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt, and Gwen Stefani shaking their derrières at Le Bâoli; Jay-Z and Kanye West grooving to fresh beats at VIP Room; Woody Allen, Penelope Cruz, and Ryan Gosling at Nikki Beach; and the Hilton sisters and Madonna at Gotha Club. Offshore, you can find most of these A-listers partying on private yachts in the middle of the Med.
What happens in Cannes: Doesn’t always stay here, which is why plenty of stars have been caught misbehaving after dark, giving the paparazzi lots to share with the world. Following The Great Gatsby premiere on opening night, English models Cara Delevingne and Georgia May Jagger (Mick’s little girl) were seen living it up aboard Roberto Cavalli’s yacht past sunrise. And so it begins…
