The escape: Mustique
Romantic retreat: Prince William, Kate
Ski bunnies: Jack Nicholson, Kevin Costner, Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn, and Kurt Russell
The pad: The Little Nell, Aspen, Colorado
The scoop: All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. And that’s why Jack Nicholson is an Aspen regular, along with lots of other Hollywood types who like to play with white powder. We’re talking about snow, of course. Discovered during the Colorado silver boom, Aspen transformed into a ski resort around 1950, and made it big during the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll 1970s, thanks to new resident John Denver and his country tunes. Since then, the St. Tropez of winter destinations has been drawing aristocratic ski bunnies, slicers, and pro racers. The Little Nell, a chic chalet at the base of Aspen’s gondola, offers VIP pampering, après-playday meals at Element 47, and hot cocoa (plus stronger stuff) at Ajax Tavern. Off campus, Jack Nicholson gets his stiff drinks at J-Bar or Red Onion, while Kevin Costner goes for a cold brew and cigar at Eric’s. For jam sessions, head to Belly Up, where everyone from Jimmy Buffett to Seal hit the stage. After a late night, wind down with an in-room massage and bubbly in front of a crackling fire at the Nell. When the lights dim, this place is fit for a Barry White music video. On or off the slopes, you can’t get enough of this town, baby.
