Mexican Restaurant NYCCOSME - You had us at Olvera
One of the most coveted reservations in town, highbrow Mexican has landed in NYC at COSME. With dishes like tender, slow-cooked duck carnitas served alongside onions, radishes, and salsa verde, they had us at “Ole”. Or in this case, Olvera. COSME may be Chef Enrique Olvera’s first restaurant venture in the US, but he’s no stranger to well-deserved accolades and worldwide fame. Olvera is the darling of the food scene in Mexico City, with his restaurant Pujol ranked 20th on the 2014 San Pellegrino List of the World’s Best restaurants. Olvera’s marriage of local Hudson Valley products with his modern Mexican cuisine yields pure brilliance. It may not be a local divey Mexican joint, (in our book thankfully not) but it will be your everyday neighborhood favorite if you can score a seat.
Which brings us to the insider scoop; the bar of COSME is practically bigger than the dining room, and you can get an expanded bar menu to give you a flavor for the inventive cuisine. On the bar menu, we started with a tostada with avocado and a cucumber and bone marrow salsa that possessed a welcomed punch of a savory, meaty flavor. We added in a simple salad, burrata and weeds (in reality assorted micro greens), which were ramped, up by a fresh salsa verde, and called it a gourmet meal. So saddle up to the bar; NYC has a new gourmet Mexican player that is here to stay.
