While the perks of being a grown-up reign supreme in the realm of romance (read: legal drinking age), remember the magic of your first love? Adorably awkward slow dances? Holding hands in back of mom and dad’s station wagon? Two-straw milkshakes? Well, there’s a place where you can recreate these uncomplicated teenage moments and it’s called Babycakes NYC.
This Lower East Side bakery is sweet-tooth paradise. Flavors rotate seasonally but range from toasted coconut (donuts) to mint-double chocolate chip (cookie sandwiches). Equally sweet: its rosy ’50s atmosphere with salmon-colored walls and matching server uniforms. This place could be a set from I Love Lucy. Which may be why Zooey Deschanel is a regular.
As for the “pure”? Babycakes single-handedly corners the market of wholesome, all-natural treats. Without losing an ounce of flavor, the sweets avoid the major problem foods: gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, nuts and refined sugar, which makes them not only vegan, but safe for most allergy diets. Sure, chocolate-strawberrry pie might not produce the same buzz as a grown-up glass of Bollinger. But it tastes like first love – and that’s pretty darn romantic.
